Car rental in Japan

Post by rainbow » Mon Dec 09, 2019 10:19 am

Hi there

I am actually planning a trip to Japan. Does somebody have some experince? Are there any car rental companies in Fukuoka, Osaka and Sapporo which I can trust? My plan is to pick up the cars at train stations and return at the same spot.

Hi!

Recommend to check Nippon Rent-a-car, Toyota Rent-a-car, and Orix rent-a-car as a first step. Second Nissan Rent-a-car and Eki-Ren.

My opinion only. ;)

I think that you won't go wrong with one of the national rental companies. They are professional, polite and very efficient, as you would expect in Japan. One issue might be is ability to converse in English. Most staff don't speak English. However usually you can book online in english language also. From time to time they might have problems in getting authorisation for non-Japanese credit cards. Cash payment is usually possible as well. Please take into account that you will need an IDP (International Driving Permit) for renting a car in Japan.

Thanks a lot for your experience. Probably I`ll look for the big international ones. What do you think?

With the international car rental companies you never go wrong. But renting at these big ones an IDP is required as well. This is minimum my experience. More or less all credit cards are accepted there.

For your information @rainbow, as you are obviously going by train and intend to use the car for some visits only you should know that Toyota for example calculates its rates based on 1, 6, 12 and 24 hour periods. And further on any time over 24-hour multiples will be charged as hourly rates.
