They seem to offer CDW/LDW as an alterantive to the insurances which can be bought at the counter of car rental companies. insuremyrentalcar is available for US - citizens and for non-US - citizens.

Right but as usual in US there are always some exceptions from the rule. One of these exceptions is that that the insurance policies are not available to people who are citizens of Washington, Iowa, New York, North Dakota, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia and Massachusetts.

Correct @Cobra11! Insuremyrentalcar provides no excess insurance but a pure rental car insurance in the form of Collision Damage Waiver and Loss Damage Waiver. They are valid for all car rentals in the USA.

Is it cheaper than buying a CDW/LDW directly at the counter of a car rental company?

Of course, this is always cheaper than buying the expensive insurances at the counter of a car rental company.

Sixt has usually included all insurances in its rental rate. Also the financial responsibilty for the renter is reduced to zero at Sixt. As a consequence Sixt renters actually don`t need any excess insurance. Hertz requests for extra money for their excess insurances.

Indeed, an important advantage for Sixt. No expensive excess insurances necessary is a really good thing. For Hertz and others the sale of insurances is of course a business case.
