From my point of view usually you don`t need any excess insurance but if you rent frequently an external own car rental insurance makes sense. A CDW/LDW coverage for let`s say $100 is more efficient than buying each time an insurance at the counter.

The break even will be reached already when you rent one time per year for 6 or 7 days.

I would never go with a 3rd party like priceline etc. as it will just lead to extra charges. As far as any excess insurance is concerned I`ve the same opinion. From my point of view it`s always the best solution to get a credit card that has insurance. The worst deal you`ll get is to buy an insurance from the rental company or a third party.

Fully agree @Macchiato, I also prefer to use the insurance linked to my credit card. That`s a cheap solution.

Honestly speaking I don`t think that a credit carsd offers sufficient insurances for rental car usage. I always book special dedicated rental car insurances. My opinion only.

I don`rely on a credit card neither. Living in FL I have Geico. It`s cheaper than any other options. ;)
