Usually any rental car at airports is much more expensive compared to other locations. Reason is that at airport locations the renter must pay higher taxes and service fees. What is the difference of rental rates when I book at a Hertz dowtown location compared to airports? Are the savings really interesting?

Absolutely correct @Clavier, the rental rates at airports are always much higher than at downtown stations. This is not only valid at Hertz but for all other carrental companies as well. Reasons are clear: higher taxes and higher service fees at airports. The difference can be up to 100 % based on my experience.

This can`t be said in general. In big cities like New York it might happen that the rental rate in downtown is even higher than at the airport. It`s very expensive to find parking space i.e. in Manhattan. These costs have to be borne by the customer.

Not true @Pirelli . I`ve checked out an example at Phoenix,AZ downtown and airport. At 949 West Camelback Road, Phoenix,AZ the daily rental rate for a Standard SUV is $58.79 incl. tax. At the Sky Harbor Airort,Phoenix, AZ the rental rate is $46.55 incl. tax.
This is a typical example that downtown rentals are frequently even more expensive than any rental at an airport.

Honestly speaking I didn`t think that downtown rental cars are more expensive than at airports.

Same experience when bookin a rental car from Hertz at JFK or New York downtown. Rental rates at downtown are much higher than at the airport.

usually I rent at a location which is close to my home or my business. Therefore I can`t take care about higher taxes and service fees at differnt locations.

Actually most of the downtown locations of Hertz are closed due to Covid19 situation. Let`s hope for the best that this phase will be over soon. However at airports usually all Hertz stations are still open and rental cars can be picked up.

I`ve same impression. Most of downtown location actually are closed. Hopefully no more too long.
