Dollar Car Rental Cheaper Than Other Rental Companies

Post by Racepoint » Tue Mar 03, 2020 5:19 am

My impression is that Dollar is overall much cheaper than other car rental companies? Is this true? What is the difference to others?

Good question @Racepoint. I think that it is true and there are very simple reasons behind. First of all the cars in the Dollar fleet are much older than at other car rental companies. Usually there are longer lines at the counter that at others. The reason is rather simple, Dollar hire less staff. An other option at Dollar to save cost is that they run less frequent airport shuttles. If you look carefully into theist facilities you will see that they are less flashy. An last but not least it is no secret that Dollar push the staff to sell more aggressively and much harder. :(

I would like to add some more information. Dollar and the Thrifty automotive group is part of the Hertz group. During the first years of this ownership phase Hertz seem to dump groudn for their old and already heavily used cars. If you rent a car at Hertz it`s likely to to get a car which still far below the 25,000 miles limit and is part of the very last model year. In case you decide to rent acar at Dollar car rental there is a big chance that you get a two year old vehicle with up to or more than 50,000 miles. You can imagine that wear and tear is also in "good" progress at these cars.

Indeed @car4you . My experience with Dollar is like this. Usually I get there a rather old car with lots of miles. But prices are low compared to the competition.

Dollar in comparison to other car rental companies is a typical example that you get what you pay for. The most promissing way to get the best rates is always when you book any rental as far in advance as you can. Also in the rental business the price is determined by supply and demand.

I would like to suggest to book as soon as you think you may want a car rental. With some car rental companies like Enterprise and Alamo it is quite simple as you can book a car rental with just your name and phone number. And then you can cancel free of charge at anytime. So there is absolutely no risk but an opportunity for big savings.

The calculation of a car rental company depends on some parameters like hard cost for a rental or percentage of the fleet utilization.
I think that for Dollar the break even is reached already at $14 per day. Hertz will need around $18 per day and others I guess more than $20 per day. My personal calculation. ;)

It is an interesting calculation you have made @Nevadacar. But I think that it is not as easy and more complicated. Also strategic objectives must be part of such a calculation.
Nice cars must be rented, not bought!

Sure, there are of course also strategic parameters involved. But the calculation of @Nevadacar is going in the right direction.
