Avis Wave Underage Fee

Good news for all young drivers. The underage fee is waived at Avis through 4/30/2020. This applies for all renters in the age from 21 to 24. This allows young drivers lots of savings. I think that there are not too much restrictions which apply. Only the locations in Maryland, New York and Michigan are excluded.

The reason why the locations in New York and Michigan are excluded is that there the minimum age to rent a car is 18. And the underage fee waiver applies from an age of 21.

This seems to be a very important reduction. Usually the additional surcharge at Avis is $27 per day for the young drivers. The savings herewith are $27 off per day.

Another restriction is that renters between the ages of 21 and 24 are not allowed to rent vehicles out of all car classes. Excluded are the following:
Full-Size SUVs
Minivans
Premium SUVs
Luxury
Passenger Vans
Select Series

In Canada the underage surcharge even is $35 per day. Rather expensive.

There are lots of exceptions from the rule. As an example in the New York State, there is a minimum age to rent of 18. There they have to pay a $52-per-day surcharge for renters age 18-20. The underage surcharge for the renters age between 21 to 24 is $35-per-day.

In Michigan for the minimum rental age of 18 a $41-per-day surcharge will apply for customers between the ages of 18 to 20. And a $28-per-day surcharge for all customers between the ages of 21 to 24 is applied usually. A really expensive exercise for all young drivers. Obviously to wave the underage fee is an excellent idea.

I would like to add that there are also special rules in Quebec. There the minimum age to rent most sedans is 21. This concerns economy, compact, intermediate, standard and full-size. The underage fee there is $20 per day for renters age from 21 to 24. However for all other car groups the normal minimum age is 25.

And in Saskatchewan the minimum age for renters is 18. There does no underage fee apply.

Waiver of the underage fee is applied not only for normal rentals but also for one-way rentals and monthly car rentals as well. Avis obviously supports actually also long-term rentals for one month or even longer.
