Car rental return outside business hours

Post by Injection » Thu Dec 26, 2019 7:41 am

Hello everybody!

We would like to go to Miami/ FL at the end of April (we are living in UK) and of course we will need a rental car there. Have already read in various forums on what I should pay attention. But a question is almost never answered in detail. How does itwork if I return the car outside of the opening hours of the car rental station? I only could read always that generally it is possible. However an extra fee will apply. OK I understand, but how does it finally work? Is there a shuttle service available outside opening hours or do I have to take a taxi from the car rental parking to the terminal at Miami Intnl. Airport? Or are all car rentals located close to the terminal (I have never been there). What are your experiences at Miami Int. Airport?

Thank you very much for your kind answers.

At MIA you will always need from the Arrival Terminal to the car rentals an approriate shuttle service which is operated by the individual car rental companies regularly. I`m not aware about the opening hours, sorry.

The big car rental companies at MIA are opened around the clock. This is valid for i.e. Alamo, Avis, Sixt, Budget. But Enterprise for example will be closed at midnight.

At small airports or at car rental companies which are closed i.e. during night it might happen that you have to pay an additional fee. :(

I strongly recommend to inform you upfront about the car rental return procedure in case you intend to use a small station with restricted opening hours. :!: :!:

The worst case scenario is that you return your car outside of business hours and there is no shuttle available for the way back to the airport terminal. What to do in such a case?

You can call a taxi if one is prepared to pick you up for one mile only ;)

My local enterprise rental car branch had a key drop box for after hour returns but lots of people took the keys out of the drop boxes and stole lots of cars
