Longterm rental as mentioned above is absolutely not a problem. I have already rented as long as four months at a time with National. What has happened was that they want you to return the vehicle about every 4 weeks for another car. Then they can perform maintenance and you cannot mile up one single vehicle endless.

I also would like to suggest to rent a car for a long-term period from a major agency. You should go off-airport to a local location. I.e. in case you rent a car at Avis at Chicago-O'Hare you have to pay almost 25% in taxes only. If you are willing to take a ten minute cab ride to i.e. Park Ridge not far away, then you have reduced taxes of roughly 7% only. ;)

For such a trip there are of course long distances involved and much of which is through a non-interesting scenery. The hassles of renting cars one-way and for extended periods it is naturally that it often comes out cheaper and easier to fly certain and a number of legs.

Anyway it is of utmost importance that prices, distances, sights, etc. should be comperaed carefully in order to determine what it is exactly that wahat really is wanted. A lot of people fly and do short excursions. On the other side many others drive cross-country with a lot of fun. Most of us who prefere flying are just try to explain some hurdles so they don't come as a shock.

I was already driving once from Detroit to LA. An experience I never want to miss. Car rental which I have used was Avis. A three weeks rental was costly but each $ spent was worthwile. Can be suggested without restrictions :D

I can imagine @Spiky! There is no other possibilty to see and enjoy the countryside than driving by car. Flying might be even cheaper however, you know, you don`t see anything.

I have read the posts and my conclusion is the suggestion that you consider buying a reliable used car. Of course not a new one. In fact normally the issue is that some rental car companies will not rent a car for a longer period than one month.

For such an adventure I personally would suggest to check out fly and drive packages. This could be done also through a local automobile club. I know about some German guests who got real spectacular rates. These rates were much better than anything given to walk in customers.

Good idea @Carol99. Another possibility is to look for a company which moves cars from place to place. Of cours you may not have one and the same car for 6 weeks but you could switch between two or several cars.

Just found this subject.
Some time ago I took the rail New York to Washington. There then I rented an old Chevy and drove all of the eastern sea bord through the southern states down to New orleans and to the Gulf of Mexico. Then I suggest to take the Amtrack train west. As you probably know there is mostly nothing to see than desert road from texas to Las Vegas. You loose lot of time there and don`t see anything interesting.

Thanks again to all user for suggestions. The idea of @Macchiato is a good one. But I wouldn`t take an old Chevy but better a normal one way rental. The risk related to old cars is high in terms of having unscheduled failures or defects.
